The Justice Department has reportedly opened an insider trading investigation at Equifax

Equifax suffered another data breach in March

But the millions of Americans whose personal data the company stockpiles to power its services are not technically customers of the company, and so it did not inform them.

Equifax has been under intense scrutiny for almost two weeks since disclosing the breach, which went unnoticed for more than a month before it was discovered at the end of July. In both incidents, the company hired the cybersecurity firm Mandiant to investigate.

The officials reportedly being looked into are John Gamble, Equifax's president of US information solutions, Joseph Loughran, and Rodolfo Ploder, the company's president of workforce solutions, according to two people familiar with the investigation.

"Earlier this year, during the 2016 tax season, Equifax experienced a security incident involving a payroll-related service. As we continue our investigation into the Equifax breach, it's vital to ensure that consumer data at the other major credit reporting agencies is safe".

The company said criminals got access to files containing personal information of some Canadian consumers - including names, addresses, social insurance numbers and in some cases credit card information - via a consumer website application intended for use by US consumers.

Equifax has been damaged by the disclosure of the May breach, with two senior security executives announcing their immediate retirement on Friday.

The company named Mark Rohrwasser as interim chief information office and Russ Ayres as interim chief security officer.

Several state attorneys general have also said they would investigate, which could result in fines at the state level.

Equifax announced on 7 September that he had been targeted by a major cyber attack over the summer.

Three Equifax executives - not the ones who are departing - sold shares worth a combined $1.8 million just a few days after the company discovered the breach, according to documents filed with securities regulators. The flaw had been discovered and fixed by Apache in March, but Equifax had not applied the patch to its own systems by May.
