Trump attacks ESPN, asks for apology over Jemele Hill comments

Jemele Hill

Those offended have been calling for her termination after the on-air personality posted the series of tweets in which she labeled Trump a white supremacist and suggested he had empowered and inflamed the upsurge in white nationalism visible throughout the country.

Hill later issued a statement of her own, apologizing for putting her colleagues and network in an unfortunate light, though she did not apology for her actual comments - nor did anyone really expect her to.

Sanders said that she was unaware if Trump had knowledge of Hill's comments.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters Wednesday that Hill's comments constituted "a fireable offense".

On Wednesday, Hill tweeted a photo of herself with members from the National Association of Black Journalists and thanked them for their backing.

While Hill has not deleted the offending tweet, she has released a statement saying that she apologizes for fostering the perception that she's speaking for her employer.

ESPN accepted her apology.

"I do", she said, "and I think they laid that out themselves by suspending one of their anchors for political comments".

Clarke, who knows the president well, added that Trump is the furthest thing from a white supremacist or racist.

Sanders went on CNN to address the matter by stating that Jemele's tweet committed a "fireable offense".

ESPN has denied they tried to shake up the roster.

Three weeks ago, ESPN said it pulled broadcaster Robert Lee, who is Asian-American, from the Virginia football season opener because of violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Conservatives have accused ESPN of a double standard when it comes to the inflammatory speech of its employees, pointing out that Ms. Hill was not formally disciplined for her remarks. I couldn't, because I cared about more than just myself.

ESPN then said she had acknowledged her tweets "crossed the line".

Considering the amount of negative press they ostensibly avoided by not replacing Hill and Smith with two white hosts, ESPN should probably count their blessings the pair was willing to be ride through the storm.
