Rebel Wilson wins €3 million in 'malicious' defamation case

Ms Wilson is currently filming with Liam Hemsworth in New York City

A Melbourne court on Wednesday ordered Bauer Media, the publisher of Woman's Day Australia, to pay Wilson $5m (AU$4.5m) in damages for its defamatory articles about her.

The Australian comedian claimed that the company, publisher of the Australian magazines Woman's Day, Australian Women's Weekly, NW and OK, defamed her with their articles, which cost her roles in Hollywood movies.

Wilson's lawyers, while speaking to CNN, said the amount is the "largest defamation damages award in Australian legal history".

According to news.com.au, the judge claimed the extent of Wilson's defamation was "unprecedented" and warranted substantial damages to the comedian.

"At trial and in the full media glare, Bauer Media tried to characterise its article as true, or as trivial, or as not likely to be taken seriously", he said.

"Their conduct was orchestrated, it was a campaign created to cast a slur on Ms Wilson, that would attract interest". In court, Wilson said that Hollywood was age-ist and that she did not lie about her age but that she did not correct journalists who got their facts wrong.

The judgement comes after a unanimous jury found Bauer Media guilty of defamation in Australian court in June.

Because of instantaneous distribution across the world wide web, precisely at a time when the media worldwide, but particularly in the US, was focused on her success in the just-released Pitch Perfect 2.

The star stands firm in her belief she's related to Walt Disney, denying allegations from Bauer Media's lawyer that her grandmother made up a "lovely" but untrue story.

She said: "I'm looking forward to helping out some great Australian charities and supporting the Oz film industry with the damages I've received".

Best known for her role as Fat Amy in the 'Pitch Perfect' films, she'll be appearing in the third instalment of the acapella-based series later this year.

"As Rebel said after the jury returned its verdict in her favour, the case was never about money, it was about holding Bauer Media to account for what they printed about her", said Corrs Partner Richard Leder who represented Rebel.
