Nadal into US Open semifinals; American Vandeweghe wins

Rafael Nadal destroy Andrey Rublev to reach semi-finals

Rafael Nadal notched up his 50th win at the US Open to reach the quarter-finals for the seventh time Monday as teen sensation Andrey Rublev and comeback queen Kaia Kanepi muscled into the spotlight.

"Every victory, every set that you win, is more confidence".

Up next for Nadal will be the victor of the quarter-final clash between five-times US Open champion Federer and Juan Martin del Potro, the 2009 victor.

Kanepi is back to her best after nearly two years off the courts because of an injury and a virus, and Keys will be aiming to join compatriots Sloane Stephens and Venus Williams in the last-four. Federer said he was anxious about his movement in his first-round match against 19-year-old American Frances Tiafoe, then had timing issues in his second-rounder against 35-year-old Russian Mikhail Youzhny - and both of those contests went five sets.

The No. 24 seed del Potro faces sixth-seeded Dominic Thiem, with the victor getting Federer if the five-time champion can improve his 31-1 record in night matches at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

"I knew a great new generation coming and Andrey is one of these players that have a great future and I wish him all the best", Nadal said, after clinching his spot in his 26th grand slam semi-final.

"I have a good shots".

Del Potro, the 2009 champion at Flushing Meadows, dropped the opening two sets of the fourth-round match.

"I just ran straight to the physio".

"Probably feels like one of those matches I would like to play over again. The only time when he was really better, in my opinion, was the fifth set", he added. He's had a rough side for a lot of years with his wrist.

That has had an effect on his two-handed backhand, to be sure, but the righty swing that produces massive forehands and serves is still intact - as Federer himself noted at his news conference and on Twitter.

Men's quarterfinals: No. 12 Pablo Carreno Busta beat No. 29 Diego Schwartzman 6-4, 6-4, 6-2; No. 28 Kevin Anderson beat No. 17 Sam Querrey 7-6 (5), 6-7 (9), 6-3, 7-6 (7).

When a reporter relayed to del Potro that Federer had spoken glowingly about him, del Potro responded: "Well, of course, I admire him, too".
