Union ministers quit ahead of Cabinet reshuffle

With PM Narendra Modi set to leave for China for BRICS summit on September 3 and return only on September 7 when the inauspicious "Pitru Paksh" would have got underway, it is widely expected that the cabinet rejig would happen before he departs.

Republic TV has reported that Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis may get a Cabinet berth and sources said that he has agreed to the proposal.

Parliamentary affairs minister Ananth Kumar is speculated to be the choice for urban development, which has been handled by rural development minister Narendra Singh Tomar as his additional charge since N Venkaiah Naidu's elevation as vice-president. The environment ministry was reassigned as additional charge after the death of minister Anil Dave.

In a tweet by the Congress official handle, a poll was launched asking, "Which Prime Minister demonetised notes in 2016, causing a loss of trillions of rupees to the nation?" and giving the options of Morarji Desai, Narendra Modi, Manmohan Singh and AB Vajpayee. Railways minister Suresh Prabhu, who had offered to resign in the wake of recent train accidents could be on his way out too.

The ministers who are holding dual portfolios such as Arun Jaitley, Smriti Irani, Harsh Vadhan are likely to be relieved from one ministry. He later became the chief minister of the state.

Agriculture minister Radhamohan Singh is also expected to go, because of the Madhya Pradesh farmer protests. Union minister Kalraj Mishra may also be dropped and given a place in one of the governors' houses.

The new faces likely to join the union government include Bhupendra Yadav, Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, both Rajya Sabha members, Satyapal Singh, Prahlad Patel, Mahesh Girri and Harish Dwivedi (all members of Lok Sabha). This was followed late on Thursday evening by a slew of Union ministers who offered their resignations.

If sources are to be believed, the Prime Ministers Office (PMO) carried out a detailed audit of performance of Cabinet ministers.

BJP chief Amit Shah has held several meetings over the past few days and today met with eight ministers though Union minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the agenda was only the Gujarat polls later this year.
