WWE 'SmackDown Live' results for August 29th include AJ Styles' open challenge

The Showoff makes his return to SmackDown but he seems frustrated that it's in a backstage interview

In the highlight of WWE Smackdown on Tuesday, Shinsuke Nakamura and Randy Orton worked together to take on WWE Champion Jinder Mahal and Rusev despite them competing against one another for an opportunity to secure a title match next week.

Last week, Chad Gable was complaining to SmackDown Live general manager Daniel Bryan about his unhappiness at his tag team partner Jason Jordan being moved to Raw.

We see Mahal and Rusev talking about beating Orton and Nakamura tonight. It was earlier announced that The Viper and The Artist would face each other in singles competition next week with the victor becoming a strong contender to challenge Mahal for the title.

The show kicked off by Mahal once again basking in the glory of his successful title defense at Summerslam before the Singh Brothers issued their apology for losing to Nakamura in a handicap match. Just as they are about to do so, Shinsuke Nakamura makes his way to the ring. Randy Orton stormed out in an attempt to save his partner for the night but with Rusev also emerging into the fold, the numbers game eventually took over. Jinder Mahal put Nakamura down with his finisher.

Benjamin & Gable looked crisp in their first outing as a team, but Konnor & Viktor were not looking to fade quietly into the night and wore down Gable. The Ascension via pinfall: The two are not called "American Alpha" and are not using Gable's awesome theme music (nor Benjamin's classic "ain't no stoppin' me now" intro). Gable sent him to the floor and Benjamin hit a facebuster to Viktor for the win.

AJ Styles re-opened the United States Open Challenge and Tye Dillinger was obliged to accept it. But before the bell could go off, Dillinger took Corbin out and entered the match itself. What followed was a lightening-fast, but still competitive, bout that ended with The Perfect 10 tapping out to Styles' Calf Crusher after reversing the Tye Breaker.

Both, Randy Orton and Shinsuke Nakamura, are current "baby faces" on WWE SmackDown, and the match next week sets up interesting prospects mainly due to the each man's in-ring style.

SmackDown Live is all about change recently, and that trend continued last week with the main roster debut of former NXT Champion Bobby Roode. This time around he defeated Mike Kanellis in a match that went three minutes. Kanellis attempted the Power of Love on Roode but the Glorious One countered it and executed the Glorious DDT for the win.

Aiden English serenades the crowd, when he is interrupted by Kevin Owens, who tells English not to waste his time on these Arkansas rednecks.

Kevin Owens lost his last shot at the U.S. Championship last week but only after more refereeing controversy involving Smackdown commissioner Shane McMahon. Owens said it never would've happened with Stephanie McMahon over on "Raw". There was no reason given for this match being made - considering Orton's multiple failed title chances - and it was announced early in the show not after the main event. He tells Owens to shut it and tells English to get back in the ring.

English would take on Sami Zayn. Owens runs down the ref and then gets in the ring.
