Monsoon rains bring Mumbai to a standstill

Heavy Rains Bring Mumbai To A Standstill

Mumbai: Heavy rains yesterday pummelled Mumbai and adjoining areas, disrupting rail, road and air services and threw normal life out of gear. The Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis advised citizens in a tweet last night to stay home unless there is an emergency. The city gauged a whopping 298 mm of rainfall, the highest in a day in August since 1997.

Teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are on alert.

"Urge the people of Mumbai and surrounding areas to stay safe and take all essential precautions in the wake of the heavy rain", the PM said.

For now, Navy divers and helicopters have been kept on stand by to meet any eventuality and as a precautionary measure schools and colleges will remain shut in Mumbai on Wednesday.

No overnight rain was reported but the Met office has said that while the city is likely to see less intense rain today, with the storm moving away, they expect heavy rain for at least 24 hours more.

Heavy downpour left the Maximum City's airport nearly crippled with long delays, forcing airlines to divert many flights to other cities or making planes to do goarounds throughout the day.

He also claimed that as many 30,000 employees of the BMC were present on the streets to help in tackling the situation.

Suburban railway services were also delayed in the morning and trains were running up to 20 minutes behind schedule, stranding daily office commuters especially on the Harbour and Central line.

In neighbouring suburbs six people were missing, said a police official, who declined to be named.

Mumbai being the capital of Maharashtra faces heavy rainfalls due to low pressure in the Atlantic Ocean.

Floods in 2005 killed more than 500 people in the city.

Mumbai struggles to cope with monsoon rains every year, prompting critics to accuse the government of poor planning.

More than 1,200 people have died in flooding during the monsoon season this year across India, Nepal and Bangladesh, according to the BBC.
