Oakland's NFL Star Marshawn Lynch Sits During US Anthem

Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch sits during the national anthem prior to the team's NFL preseason football game against the Arizona Cardinals Saturday Aug. 12 2017 in Glendale Ariz

Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch opted to sit during the playing "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Saturday's preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals, making him the latest pro athlete to protest racism and police brutality by not standing during the national anthem.

Lynch has spoken to the media just once since coming out retirement and joining the Raiders after a trade with the Seattle Seahawks last spring.

"It's a non-issue for me", Del Rio was quoted as saying.

However, Oakland Raiders team coach, Jack del Rio, told reporters that after the game Lynch told him "This is something I've done for 11 years".

The decision is identical to ex-San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick when he kneeled during the national anthem during the regular season past year to protest police brutality in the United States. Lynch voiced support for Kaepernick while speaking to talk-show host Conan O'Brien previous year, and Saturday's sit-down came right after racially-motivated protests and violence recently took place in Charlottesville, Va.

Lynch didn't play in Saturday's game against the Cardinals, and had already left the stadium by the time media was granted access to the locker room.

But that is not the opinion Del Rio had last August when he was asked about Kaepernick's refusal to stand. "If you really not racist, then you won't see what (Kaepernick is) doing as a threat to America, but just addressing a problem that we have".

"It's never come to a point where I've had to address it; it's always been understood", Del Rio said to the Mercury News.

"I thought I was going to get the first quarter", Palmer said. "It's not a form of anything other than me being myself'".

It is noteworthy however, that Del Rio used words like 'you, ' and 'we.' Clearly drawing a line and a division between Lynch and the rest of the squad when it comes to the issue of protest.

Kaepernick remains an unsigned free agent.
