Iran MPs boost missile funds in response to United States sanctions

North Korea’s announcement that it is finalising a plan to launch four ballistic missiles over Japan toward the island of Guam has touched off a series of fiery threats from president Donald Trump and upped tensions between Pyongyang and Washington to

The bill will allocate $260m (£200m) to Iran's ballistic missile programme and the same amount to Quds Force, the special forces unit of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guard.

The measure came after President Donald Trump signed into law a bill passed by US Congress to impose new sanctions on Iran over its missile program in early August. During Sunday's voting session, 240 out of 244 legislators approved the missile spending bill.

He further said American officials should be aware that the legislation was just the first step against anti-Iran measures.

It would require Iran's government and armed forces to draw up a strategy to counter U.S. violations of human rights around the world, and to support Iranian bodies and individuals affected by USA sanctions. The vote comes amid growing tensions with the USA over the Iranian nuclear deal, which President Trump has said he would like to see cancelled.

Iran's chief nuclear negotiator, Abbas Araqchi, said the new bill was not in violation of the 2015 agreement limiting the country's nuclear programme.

Iran denies its missile programme violates a United Nations resolution that endorsed Tehran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers and calls upon the Islamic Republic not to conduct activities related to ballistic missiles created to deliver nuclear weapons.

He added that the bill will be supported by the government of President Hassan Rouhani, as it is required to pass a second reading before being submitted to the Guardian Council for final approval.

But last month he backed away from his pledge to withdraw from the agreement.

To counter United States economic sanctions, the government has been ordered to provide a comprehensive plan on expanding economic cooperation with world countries, especially Iran's neighbors and friends as well as the countries which have likewise been subject to Washington's embargoes.
