South Africa's president survives latest no-confidence vote amidst allegations of corruption

File ANC Chief Whip Jackson Mthembu said the ruling party was not surprised by Mbete's decision

Members of the ruling African National Congress (ANC) in South Africa rallied around President Jacob Zuma preventing his ouster from office through a vote in Parliament.

Some market watchers argued ahead of the vote that it would fail, noting that Zuma's term as leader of his party, the African National Congress, ends in December 2017, anyway, although his term as president ends in 2019.

On Monday, Parliament Speaker Baleka Mbete announced that the no-confidence motion against Zuma would be voted on through a secret ballot.

UPDATE: President Zuma has survived yet another motion of no confidence with 198 MPs supporting him and 177 against.

"I plead you. Let us put the people of South Africa first".

Reacting to the vote, Zuma told supporters gathered outside the parliament in Cape Town: "It's hard to defeat the ANC".

That underlines the control Zuma exerts over the party, despite accelerating allegations of influence-peddling and corruption, a Wall Street Journal report noted earlier this year.

The no-confidence motion needs 201 votes to succeed, or a simple majority of parliament's 400 seats.

The call for the eighth motion of no confidence in Zuma came after he reshuffled his Cabinet on 30 March, a move that saw then Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and his deputy, Mcebisi Jonas, sacked.

Academic and political analyst Richard Calland said the ANC's victory would prove shortlived because the party's woes were confirmed by a "not insignificant" number of its members casting their ballots with the opposition camp. The party's chief whip described a removal of Zuma as equivalent to throwing a nuclear bomb adding that ANC MPs will have to be bewitched to tow that line.

This shows a marked increase becasue previously 113, 99, 126, 143 MPs voted in favour of the motion.

Al Jazeera's Haru Mutasa, reporting from Cape Town, said that the "tight result" indicated that some of Zuma's party mates voted for him to go.

"They believe they could use technicalities in parliament to take over the majority from the ANC. That's what brings us here today", he said. Against this background, the Rand seems destined to weaken further, particularly if worries over the central bank's independence grow and/or Moody's decides to follow its rivals by downgrading the country's credit rating to junk.

She claimed the motion of no confidence was the work of an "insurrectionist opposition" whose main aim was to "sow seeds of chaos in society to ultimately grab power".
