Tropical Storm Franklin hits Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula

Budding Atlantic tropical storm to threaten Mexico this week

Although Tropical Storm Franklin brought some downpours and winds gusting to 25 miles per hour, Grand Cayman appears to have been spared the worst of it.

Rainfall amounts of three to six inches, with isolated amounts around 12 inches, are possible across the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico and Belize through Wednesday, with the highest amounts over the Mexican state of Quintana Roo.

Franklin made landfall late Monday night near Pulticub, Mexico. However, the National Hurricane Center is forecasting it to strengthen. Rainfall of 4-8 inches can be expected, especially just north of the forecast track, along with winds gusting at 60-70 miles per hour.

The storm continues to batter Belize and the Yucatan Peninsula with heavy rain and strong winds, and flash flooding is still a major concern.

Meanwhile, a smattering of disorganized storms and showers in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean was given a low chance of becoming a cyclone over the next five days. Once in the gulf, Franklin is expected to intensify and as we mentioned on Sunday, Franklin is going to come very close to hurricane strength before making a second landfall in Mexico.

Tropical storm warnings extend over most of the rest of the Yucatan Peninsula, including CancĂșn and Cozumel.

A tropical storm warning was posted for the Mexican coast from Chetumal to Sabancuy. Some coastal flooding, along with rip currents are also expected. Strengthening is forecast until the center reaches the eastern coast of the Yucatan peninsula, and Franklin could be near hurricane strength by the time landfall occurs this evening.

"Franklin will at least graze the northern coast of Honduras through Monday morning before hitting the Yucatan", according to AccuWeather Meteorologist Brett Rossio.

The height of the 2017 hurricane season will be from mid-August through mid-October since hurricanes can form in the Atlantic and Carribean easier due to the high heat.
