Worldwide boss gives verdict on potential Southampton transfer

Holland manager Dick Advocaat has urged Southampton to grant Van Dijk's wishes of a move

After reports emerged in June that he was on the verge of a £60million transfer to Liverpool, Southampton reported them to the Premier League for making an alleged illegal approach.

With Liverpool odds-on at 1/2, Chelsea are now 15/8 to sign Van Dijk, who can be backed at 8/1 to still be with the Saints after the current transfer window closes.

The Reds boss has already signed left-back Andrew Robertson but the German feels a centre-back isn't an urgent need at Anfield.

Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk confirmed on Monday (Aug 7) that he had handed in a transfer request and expressed disappointment at the Premier League club's refusal to listen to offers for him.

"We can not force things and we would never get a centre-back just because someone is available". I don't think we need more.

"Following this conversation the manager. told me I would therefore have to train away from the first team". "Five. Then you win a prize", Klopp was quoted as saying by ESPNFC.

Southampton reiterated their stance to van Dijk last week in "tense talks" and while there is a deadlock in the situation at present, the most likely outcome is that the Dutchman leaves the south coast this summer.

Whether the Dutch worldwide moves to Anfield or not, his Southampton career must now be at an end. I am already here to work with this squad and not just always thinking 'but if we don't get this or this.' Let's wait until August 31.

Van Dijk, should he ever pull on the Liverpool shirt, would provide a chance to remedy.

The 26-year-old also described any suggestions that he had refused to train as untrue and "insulting" and claimed he had been open and honest in informing Pellegrino that he did not feel he was in a "settled mindset".

"What I said is the truth", he said.

"It doesn't work. I don't see it [the defence] as a concern".
