Police Across The Country Slam Trump's Aggressive Law-And-Order Speech

Trump Wants Police Officers To Be MORE Violent To 'Thugs'!

During a speech in front of law enforcement officers on Long Island, Trump seemed to promote the idea that police brutality was actually a positive trait and said officers didn't have to be "too nice" when dealing with crime suspects. Is it appropriate for Trump to encourage police not to be "too nice" to suspects?

"When you guys put somebody in the vehicle and you're protecting their head you know, the way you put their hand over [their head]", Trump continued, mimicking the motion. One man was taken into custody after it was discovered he had been deported from the country on two previous occasions, officials say.

After President Trump's speech, the Gainesville Police Department took to social media to reject what he said. "As a department, we do not and will not tolerate roughing up of prisoners", the statement said.

And although a group of police officers standing behind Trump applauded at the remark in his speech, the Suffolk County Police Department tweeted shortly after, condemning it. "Just like they don't want to have rich people at the head of treasury", Trump said.

His remarks elicited cheers from the audience of law enforcement, which included local lawmakers, officers from the Suffolk County Police Department, the Nassau County Police Department acting police commissioner Patrick Ryder, Suffolk County Sheriff Vincent DeMarco and deputies and jail guards from the Suffolk County Sheriff's office, according to Newsday reporter Nicole Fuller.

Prosecutors argued that Gray should not have been arrested in the first place and that he was given a "rough ride" in the back of a police transport. Clearly, some humor is in bad taste and we will surely get some that attack us for seemingly defending the President's words but seriously, is there so much hatred for President Trump and law enforcement that the clear joke can not be seen?

In a statement emailed to HuffPost, the NYPD called suggestions for police officers to use alternative standards for use of force "irresponsible" and "unprofessional".

Trump continued his habit of going into gruesome detail about gang violence during the speech, describing one of his favorite targets, the largely Latino gang MS-13, as a "vile cartel" and its members as "animals".

In New York City, the president's comment and the reaction from the crowd recalled the days of former Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani, who was accused at times of ignoring inappropriate behavior by the police.

"Violations of those rules are treated extremely seriously", the department wrote.
