Mahmoud Abbas suspends 'all levels' of relations with Israel

Israeli police in the old city of Jerusalem

There has been scene of escalating violence between Israelis and Palestinians in the Old City area with protests over security measures and restriction on access to the Temple Mount in East Jerusalem.

Tensions have run high since last week, when three gunmen shot and killed two Israeli policeman near Temple Mount, a hilltop compound near the Western Wall and one of the most important holy sites in Judaism, Islam and Christianity.

"A Palestinian infiltrated a private home in the community of Neve Tsuf, northwest of Ramallah, and stabbed four Israeli civilians", a statement said.

At the conclusion of the Isha evening prayers, clashes erupted again with Israeli forces firing stun grenades at the crowd, Al Jazeera's Harry Fawcett, who was reporting outside al-Aqsa, said. Rioters threw rocks and glass bottles, and rolled burning tires at security forces.

Thousands of police were deployed around the compound on Friday morning, and Palestinian men under the age of 50 were barred from entering the Old City - a measure which is sometimes taken to try to prevent violent protests at the holy site.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas spoke with USA counterpart Donald Trump's senior adviser and son-in-law Jared Kushner, urging the White House to intervene, the Palestinians' official Wafa news agency reported.

Tear gas being fired at protesters on Friday by Israeli forces outside the Old City. Access to the shrine at Temple Mount has been limited to women of any age and men over 50.

They asked every mosque in the city to close and worshippers were urged to instead pray outside the gates of al Aqsa rather than submit to the security procedures.

Instead, Muslim worshippers who refused to pass through the detectors held prayers outside in the streets.

An Israeli military official said a grandfather and two of his children died, while the grandmother was wounded.

Israel asserts there is no change to status quo and the metal detectors are necessary to stop further attacks.

Mr Abbas made the announcement during a meeting late Friday with senior Palestinian officials to discuss the growing escalation over a major Jerusalem shrine.
