Donald Trump's approval hits record low

Mainstream Media CNN Fake News Get Trump

That was Donald Trump in May 2016, on the campaign trail, bright-eyed and inanely pompous. And less than half approve of Trump's performance on the economy. The results are at odds with conventional political wisdom that says approval ratings are closely tied to how voters feel about their own financial wellbeing. Trump tweeted to defend himself.

Trump wrote on Twitter.

The ABC News/Washington Post poll shows the president now has just a 36% approval rating, showing a drop of 6 points since a similar poll taken after his first 100 days in office.

And this new polling shows Americans are disgusted with Trump for a variety of self-inflicted reasons.

Trump Jr.'s meeting with Natalia Veselnitskaya, a politically-connected Russian lawyer whom the Trump team believed had damaging information on Clinton in June 2016, has stirred controversy for the White House.

"Well, I wonder why the Secret Service, if this was nefarious, why the Secret Service allowed these people in".

The fresh survey indicates that almost half of all Americans - 48 percent - see the country's leadership in the world as weaker since Mr Trump was inaugurated in January, compared with 27 percent who say it is stronger.

Half of those surveyed said they prefer to keep the current health care law, while just 24 percent said they favour the GOP plan.

U.S. President Donald Trump attends the bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the G20 leaders summit in Hamburg, Germany on July 8, 2017.

Trump reacted to the survey by downplaying the result and questioning the accuracy of the poll.

Despite all evidence to the contrary, just over 3 in 10 Americans still do not think the Russian government tried to influence the outcome of last fall's US presidential election.

Sixty percent think Russian Federation tried to influence the 2016 presidential race and 67 percent believe Trump aides helped them. But among Republicans, one-third think Russian Federation tried to influence the election outcome, and fewer than one in ten think Trump's associates sought to help them. Even more dramatically, "the public by a broad 63-27 percent says it's more important to provide health care coverage for low-income Americans than to cut taxes". Sixty-eight percent described his tweets as "inappropriate" and 52 percent said they were "dangerous".

Suspicions of Trump have eased at least slightly on one front.

On the plus side, opinions about Trump's economic proposals were evenly divided, with 43 percent of respondents approving and 41 percent disapproving.

Media coverage often focuses on how rank-and-file Republicans, as well as elected officials, continue to stand behind Trump. His standing is a mirror opposite of Obama and Bush at this point in their first terms.

A president's job approval rating is the essential barometer of his popularity, but it can also be unsatisfying in its lack of specificity.

Where Trump really differs from Obama is that his approval leans more heavily on strong backers.

Gallup conducts the approval rating poll after six months presidency of the USA presidents. A 55 per cent majority say Trump is not making significant progress toward his goals.

The poll also reveals Americans are not really believing that they'd be better off by the Republican plan to replace Obamacare.

Only 28 per cent of people polled said the U.S. had grown stronger.

The only good news for Mr Trump in the poll is how his opponents, the Democrats, are viewed. Some 37 per cent say the party now stands for something, while 52 per cent say it mainly stands against Trump. Trump is now in the middle of the Republican base average, so if he drops, it will signal to Congressional Republicans that his president has lost his grip on his party's base, and they are free to break with him.
