Twitter suspends several alt-right accounts

Twitter suspends major alt-right accounts

The apparent crackdown on alt-right users coincides with the social media company's announcement that users can now hide certain keywords, phrases, and even conversations as a way to shield themselves from hate speech and abuse.

Accounts for Spencer's think tank and its online magazine, Radix Journal, are also now suspended, as are accounts belonging to white nationalists Paul Town, Pax Dickinson, Ricky Vaughn and John Rivers.

The suspensions follow Trump's controversial appointment of Steve Bannon, the former Breitbart News executive chairman, as an adviser.

A Twitter spokesperson said "the Twitter Rules prohibit violent threats, harassment, hateful conduct, and multiple account abuse, and we will take action on accounts violating those policies".

The alt-right movement came to the fore during the U.S. presidential campaign, especially after Republican nominee Donald Trump added Steve Bannon to his campaign team. Spencer is often credited with spearheading the alt-right movement, an ideology that's been associated with white supremacist views. She also pointed to two alt-right accounts that had been verified by Twitter, including Spencer's.

In a YouTube video entitled "Knight of the Long Knives", a reference to Hitler's 1934 purge of Nazi leaders, Spencer said "digitally speaking" there has been "execution squads across the alt-right".

In an interview with The Daily Caller, Spencer described Twitter's move as "corporate Stalinism".

"Gab just seems like a pointless echo chamber, there are enough alt-right blogs and forums", wrote one supporter of the movement in a discussion thread about the Twitter suspensions.

Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWR) has initiated a mass removal of eminent accounts associated with the alt-right just a week after the stunning electoral victory of Donald Trump in the USA presidential elections, according to the Daily Caller.

Spencer, who coined the term alt right in 2010, says he was tossed from Twitter for his political views - he wants to segregate the United States by racial groups - not for harassing Twitter users.

"T$3 he ADL report adds further confirmation that the company fails to ban abusive accounts", the SPLC stated, sharing ADL study's findings on its website.

After Jones faced a barrage of sexist and racist attacks from countless Twitter users, the social media platform was criticized for not stepping in sooner.

Less than a day after rolling out new anti-harassment features, Twitter suspended several accounts associated with the alt-right movement.

While he acknowledged that Twitter is a company and has a right to do as it pleases, he says it also needs to accept that it has evolved into something bigger and needs to act accordingly.
